Mixed Fiber Arts
In Mixed Fiber Arts, Hollis Hickerson invites young creatives to explore the idea of transformation- including personal, artistic, and communal- through observation, reflection, and hands-on making. Workshops are designed as a complete creative encounter with the possibility of also contributing to a larger collective work, ensuring that every child’s voice is represented.
Beginning with engaging writing prompts and playful experimentation with different materials, students will learn how artists transform ideas, emotions, and materials into visual forms. Hollis will demonstrate different felting and weaving techniques before guiding participants through their independent creative processes. Each participant will create an individual piece of art that represents a personal moment of change, whether learning something new, overcoming a challenge, or discovering a creative voice. For residencies, Hollis could record the process and create a short documentary showcasing the students’ journey.
In this program:
- Students will explore the concept of transformation through hands-on making, observation, and self-reflection.
- Students will create an original mixed-media textile piece using familiar materials in a new and inventive way.
- Students will evaluate their creative process, reflecting on how raw materials evolved into finished artwork and the decisions made along the way as well as share observations about how art can reflect, connect, and transform communities.
